2.8.5. Hanger and support systems
Note: The following information was a lodged as a draft for consideration by Standards Australia for the up and coming revision of AS4254.2002 SECTION 2.8.5.
Flexible ducts shall be supported in the following manner:
a) Hanger material in contact with the duct shall be the following minimum widths in millimetres; to prevent any restriction of the internal diameter of the duct when the weight of the supported section of the duct rests on the hanger.
(1) Flexible duct airway 250mm Ø and under = 25mm minimum.
(2) Flexible duct airway 300mm Ø and over = 50mm minimum. Under no circumstances shall the width of the hanger in contact with the duct be less than 25mm (See figure 2.8.5. (B))
b) At manufacturers recommended intervals but at no greater distances than the following to comply with BCA section ‘J’ insulation thicknesses.
(1) Distance between hanger/support 1.5m for < 250mm Ø /25mm insulated duct and under.
(2) Distance between hanger/support 1.2m for > 250mm Ø /38mm & 50mm insulated duct and over.
c) Maximum permissible sag between hanger/support shall be 40mm/m of hanger/support spacing (see figure 2.8.5. (A))
d) Hanger/support shall be adequately attached to the building structure as per manufactures recommendations.
e) Load weight ratings on hanger shall not exceed the following:
(1) Flexible duct airway 250mm Ø and under = 15 kilograms.
(2) Flexible duct airway 300mm Ø and over = 30 kilograms.
Note: Refer to manufacturer for inline fan weights if applicable.
f) Terminal devices (i.e. – grilles/plenums) connected by flexible duct shall be supported independently of the flexible duct regardless of clause b.
g) Hanger /support material in contact with the duct shall have a flame index not greater than ‘0’ and a smoke develop mean not greater than 4 when tested in accordance to AS/NZS 1530.3.
h) Ductwork installed in sub-floor situations shall be hung/supported such that no part of the ductwork be in contact with the ground or associated surrounding services.
Note: It is recommended that flexible duct be installed in lengths not exceeding 6m between a duct spigot and a terminal device. Refer to inline fan manufacturer for maximum permissible fan positioning.
